While India’s metros are bursting with elite schools, it is often the small towns that hunger for world-class education. In Kashipur, Uttarakhand, that hunger was met by Vasudha and Neeraj Kapoor, founders of The Gurukul Foundation School.
When they began in 2004, Kashipur already had 50 schools. Yet, none focused on holistic education that nurtured character alongside academics. Gurukul stepped in to fill that void. From a mere 13 students in its first year, it has grown to over 1,100 students today, with two flourishing campuses.
The Kapoors’ motivation was deeply personal. Their younger son Chaitanya’s tragic passing became both a heartbreak and a source of strength. In his memory, they built Gurukul as a tribute—a place where every child would receive the love, opportunities, and holistic education he symbolized.
The school’s philosophy is simple yet profound: integrate India’s ancient Gurukul values with the needs of a modern, global education. Students engage in arts, yoga, STEM, theatre, and debates, while also learning compassion, resilience, and mindfulness.
The road was not easy. Building in a dilapidated factory with scarce funds, raising capital through loans, and convincing skeptical parents in a traditional town all posed challenges. Recruiting teachers and training them in progressive methods added another layer of difficulty. Yet, persistence and passion carried them forward.
Their success is now undeniable. Gurukul has been ranked Kashipur’s top school for seven consecutive years and is recognized as one of Uttarakhand’s finest. Its students have made headlines in NASA challenges, national debates, and robotics competitions. The school also became India’s first to sign an MoU with IIM Kashipur for Atal Tinkering Labs, reaffirming its commitment to innovation.
For Vasudha and Neeraj, the measure of success lies not just in rankings but in the lives they shape. Inspired by Swami Vivekananda’s vision, they see education as a tool for nation-building, particularly in bridging the metro-rural divide.
Looking ahead, they dream of scaling Gurukul into a pan-India model, opening preschools across rural and urban India. Their advice to entrepreneurs: “Start with purpose. Success is not about scale alone, but the soul you put into your work.”
