In the world of modern medicine, there are doctors who heal with their skill, and then there are those who inspire with their humanity. Among the latter stands Dr. Arvind Prasad Gupta, one of Bihar’s most distinguished orthopedic surgeons and a name that has become synonymous with excellence, integrity, and innovation in the field of joint replacement and sports injury management.
Honored with the Times Health Icon of Bihar and the Doctor Pride Award by Dainik Bhaskar, Dr. Gupta’s journey from a small-town boy in Madhubani to an internationally trained specialist is nothing short of extraordinary.
Born in December 1981 in Madhubani district, Dr. Gupta grew up in a modest household filled with big dreams. His father, Vishwanath Prasad Gupta, and mother, Pramila Gupta, envisioned a future where their son would serve humanity as a doctor. Arvind, an intelligent and disciplined child, lived up to those expectations. He completed his matriculation from Surya Prasad High School, Laukahi in 1996, scoring excellent marks that reflected his early brilliance. He later pursued higher secondary education at Marwari College, Darbhanga, before setting his sights on medical school.

In 2000, his hard work bore fruit when he earned admission to the prestigious Banaras Hindu University (BHU), one of India’s most respected medical institutions. During his years at BHU, Arvind displayed exceptional dedication, a sharp intellect, and a deep curiosity about orthopedic medicine. By 2005, he successfully completed his MBBS, fulfilling his parents’ lifelong dream. Yet for Dr. Gupta, this was not the destination—it was just the beginning. Fascinated by the intricate mechanism of bones and joints, he decided to specialize in Orthopedics.
In 2006, he began his postgraduate training in Orthopedics at BHU, where he refined his surgical skills and developed a deep understanding of musculoskeletal disorders. By 2009, with his postgraduate degree completed, he stepped into the demanding world of real-time surgery and patient care.
His next chapter took him to Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi, in 2010 as a Senior Resident. For three years, Dr. Gupta contributed to one of the busiest hospitals in the country, performing numerous complex orthopedic procedures. These years honed his clinical acumen, strengthened his decision-making under pressure, and deepened his compassion for patients from all walks of life.
Despite his growing career in Delhi, family responsibilities soon drew him back to Bihar. In 2013, Dr. Gupta returned to Patna, where he joined the newly established Paras Hospital in Raja Bazaar. This marked the beginning of a new era in orthopedic care for the region. Under his leadership, minimally invasive arthroscopic surgeries of the hip, shoulder, ankle, and wrist were successfully performed for the first time in Bihar. His expertise and precision brought a wave of transformation to joint and ligament treatment in the state.
Dr. Gupta’s professional journey was shaped by a thirst for continuous learning. Determined to bring the latest global advancements to Bihar, he traveled to Munich, Germany, for advanced training in Ligament and Joint Replacement Surgery. There, he trained under the world-renowned orthopedic specialist Dr. Bryan Cole, who personally mentored him in advanced arthroscopy and sports injury management. In 2019, he further enhanced his expertise at the California Medical Center, USA, gaining deeper insight into advanced joint replacement procedures.
A former football player himself, Dr. Gupta’s connection with sports runs deep. Perhaps this is why his understanding of sports injuries and athlete rehabilitation is so instinctive. Today, he is widely recognized as a leading expert in sports injury management, ligament reconstruction, and joint replacement surgery. His approach combines advanced surgical methods with patient-centered care—ensuring faster recovery, less pain, and a return to active living.
In 2019, leveraging his growing reputation and patient trust, Dr. Gupta, along with his wife Amrita Gupta, a professional psychologist, established the Ligament & Joint Arthritis Clinic in Raja Bazaar, Patna. Designed as a complete orthopedic and rehabilitation center, it offers world-class facilities for diagnosis, physiotherapy, and recovery. According to Mrs. Gupta, the clinic was born out of a shared vision—to make world-class treatment accessible locally, while maintaining a deeply human touch in patient care.
Alongside the main clinic, a state-of-the-art physiotherapy center was also launched to ensure holistic healing for every patient.

Dr. Gupta’s academic interests remain as strong as his clinical ones. He is an active member of the Indian Orthopedic Association, Indian Arthroscopy Society, and Indian Medical Association. In 2019, he presented a research paper at BHU on “The Significance of Arthroscopic Treatment in Knee Disorders”, which received high appreciation in academic circles. Again, in 2021, he submitted another paper titled “The Importance of Osteotomy in Knee Pain Management.” His focus on research and innovation reflects his belief that medicine is not just a practice but a constantly evolving science.
Despite his professional achievements, Dr. Gupta has never distanced himself from the community that shaped him. Known for his humility and compassion, he regularly conducts free medical camps for economically weaker patients and athletes who cannot afford specialized care. He collaborates with self-help groups and NGOs to ensure free or subsidized treatment, often contributing personally to help patients continue their recovery.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Gupta earned immense respect as a Corona Warrior, tirelessly serving patients amid high-risk conditions. His commitment to duty and courage in those testing times inspired many young doctors across Bihar.
Every year, on August 29 (National Sports Day), Dr. Gupta celebrates his love for sports and wellness by honoring local athletes and promoting awareness about fitness and injury prevention. He believes that physical activity and awareness about joint health are key to a better quality of life. Through such initiatives, he continues to bridge the gap between medicine and sports, encouraging youth to stay active while educating them about safe and sustainable fitness practices.
Today, after more than a decade of relentless service, Dr. Arvind Prasad Gupta stands as a beacon of hope and healing for thousands of patients. His name evokes trust not just because of his surgical brilliance but also because of his empathetic approach to healthcare. Whether treating a star athlete recovering from a ligament injury or a common man suffering from arthritis, his goal remains the same — to restore movement, confidence, and quality of life.

Beyond the operation theatre, Dr. Gupta is admired for his calm demeanor, discipline, and sense of balance in life. His colleagues describe him as a perfectionist with a gentle heart—a doctor who listens, cares, and acts with precision. His patients remember him as someone who treats them like family, offering not just medical solutions but emotional support as well.
From his early days in Madhubani to his world-class training abroad, and from his successful surgeries in Patna to his dedication toward community health, Dr. Arvind Prasad Gupta’s story is one of vision, dedication, and compassion. He represents a new generation of Indian doctors who are rooted in their homeland yet open to global innovation. His journey reminds us that success in medicine is not merely about curing ailments—it’s about healing lives.
Through every surgery, every patient interaction, and every act of service, Dr. Gupta continues to prove that true excellence lies not just in what you achieve, but in how you use that achievement to uplift others. And in that sense, Bihar’s own “Bone Maestro” continues to compose a melody of healing—one that will echo in the corridors of Indian medicine for years to come.
